The 9th Annual Great International Beer Competition was held on Friday, November 11, 2005, in Providence, Rhode Island, one day before the 12th Annual Great International Beer Festival. Festivals of America produced both events. New England beer newspaper Yankee Brew News was the media sponsor of the competition.

One hundred ninety-five beers and ciders (including 12 imports) from 50 breweries and cideries representing 13 states and eight countries entered the competition. Forty-five professional brewers and beer industry journalists acted as judges in a blind tasting format. First, second and third place awards were presented in seventeen categories of ales, lagers and ciders. The judges knew only the style and subcategory of each beer or cider.

Leading the pack for the ninth year was the Boston Beer Co., garnering five medals for Samuel Adams beers and two medals for HardCore ciders. The brewery coming closest to this total was Rogue Ales of Newport, Or., with five medals.

Since the competition began in 1997, over 1,200 beers and ciders have been judged. The awards were presented during the afternoon session of the beer festival, announced by Yankee Brew News co-publisher Jamie Magee and editor Gregg Glaser. On the floor of the festival, held at the Rhode Island Convention Center, 4,300 beer lovers were able to sample over 250 beers from approximately 80 breweries.

The 10th Annual Great International Beer Competition and the 2006 Great International Beer Festival will take place on November 10-11, 2006, in Providence.
